Zachary D. Lazar, a devoted husband, loving father, affectionate grandfather, and cherished great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on August 16, 2023. He was the much-loved husband of Muriel Lazar for 38 years, their enduring relationship serving as an example of commitment and devotion. Together, they navigated life's joys and challenges, their bond growing stronger through the years as they traveled throughout the world on adventures that most people can only dream of.   

Zack's journey through life left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless students he mentored, taught, and coached. His legacy will forever be remembered for his unwavering love, wisdom, and the warmth of his hug.

As a father, Zachary provided support and wisdom to his children: Zachary Jr. (Anne) Lazar, Justine (Craig) Atkison, Alex (Colleen) Lazar, and stepchildren Pam (Jim Te Winkle) Rezek and Phil Rezek. He gently guided them, instilling values of kindness, integrity, and adventure.

Zachary's heart overflowed with love for his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart. Alexandra Lazar, Connor (Kasey) Atkison, Quintin Atkison (Makenzie Varitek), Dylan Atkison (Laurynn Zimmerman), Emma, Maggie, Carleigh, and Caitlin Lazar, Max and Kelly Te Winkle, and Beau and Natalie Rezek brought immense joy to his life. His face would light up with happiness whenever he was with them, creating cherished memories that will endure in their hearts.

In his later years, Zachary embraced the role of great-grandfather with open arms. James and Leia brought even more happiness and vitality to his world, making him smile whenever they visited.

Born on May 9, 1938, he was the eldest son of a close-knit family. Zachary was a dear brother to Carolyn (Warren) Wisdom and Stephen Lazar (Michael Grazer) and was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Yohe. His family bonds provided him with strength and support throughout his life. He was a loving uncle to Cabrini Hays, Tia Cerone, Ty Yohe, and was preceded in death by his nephew, Tom Yohe.

Zack dedicated over 30 years to education, retiring from teaching at New Trier High School in 1993.

 

The family has chosen not to hold a formal service, and interment will remain private.

 In place of offering condolences, the family invites you to share a cherished story or memory of Zack, creating a lasting tribute to his remarkable life. 

In lieu of flowers, they kindly request donations in Zachary's name to The Friends of the Chicago River or The Nature Conservancy, reflecting his commitment to making the world a healthier, cleaner, and better place.
